The Worship Team consists of a contemporary praise band (keyboards, guitars, drums/percussion) and a rotation of three or four singers per week who help lead congregational singing in the 9:15 A.M. Sunday service. Singers rotate from a team of about 10-12 volunteers from the Praise Choir. Participation is by audition. The Worship Team ordinarily rehearses on Saturday mornings. Do I have to be in the Praise Choir to sing on the Worship Team? The Praise Choir rehearses weekly (I ask people to strive to attend 75% of the rehearsals for best results). It averages singing maybe 18 times a year, a little more than often than monthly. there are some occasional multi-week clusters.  The Worship Team currently has enough singers to be a once every three weeks rotation. In the past we've required worship team members to be in the praise choir. This has been primarily to encourage a servant mentality for the 'spotlighted worship team singers.' The main vocal ministry is the choir. We draw then from the choir those who have the gifts and microphone comfort who are willing to make an additional commitment to worship team.  A second reason for the requirement is that it's proven to be the best way for worship team singers to learn the new songs the congregation will be singing, which can be as many as 20 per year. In choir, we solidify the structure, harmony, rhythms, style, emphases, etc. in a way that we don't have time to work on in worship team rehearsals. Worship team rehearsals are primarily for touch up and sound check, not for learning. Choir involvement improves the quality significantly. I think you would find it much easier with all the new songs if you could be in choir also. So, my recommendation is that choir involvement is the best 'road.' However, we currently don't have enough worship team members from just from the choir.
