The Session recently decided to allow coffee/tea/soda in the sanctuary, but only if it is in a spill proof mug (to protect against carpet stains). This does not include fast-food or convenience store cups with plastic lids. You can bring your own spill-proof mug, and the coffee bar plans to order some Grace mugs. The Session recognized that there has been a long tradition of not permitting this, with some having concerns about reverence in the worship area and carpet care. However, the Session did not find a clear biblical requirement to forbid it, and believes that in today’s culture, providing/allowing coffee is hospitable and welcoming, especially to those coming from unchurched backgrounds.
